Borlaug Slide Show to Share

Hello Borlaug Families,

We have a new Power Point slideshow that is available at the following link:

The Power Point presents information about Borlaug Elementary, our students and families, as well as Dr. Borlaug’s story.  We have this presentation running on our office monitor as a way to welcome families and to give visitors something special to view while waiting in the office.  Thank you to Amy Sorensen, our Instructional Coach, for creating this.

We hope you enjoy!

Welcome to Borlaug and the 2013-14 School Year!

Hello Borlaug Families,
We were very excited to welcome our students and families to the first day of school! There were so many smiling faces, happy to be back to Borlaug.
Please call us at 688-1155 if you need any assistance with updating your E-Registration. We are currently at about 80% of our families updated.  We need to have 100% updated, so we are sure we have the most current information for contact purposes.
We will have early release on both the first and second day of school.  This means we will dismiss at 2:00 on both Wednesday, August 21st and Thursday, August 22nd, with Friday’s dismissal at 3:00.  We want to remind our preschool families that preschool begins on Monday, August 26th.
Thank you to our wonderful PTO for sponsoring a Boohoo/Yahoo Breakfast on the first day of school.  It was an informal time to socialize and have a light breakfast with other Borlaug parents.
Have a great week!

I want to take this opportunity to thank the Borlaug Community for an outstanding first year, as I am filled with great pride because of our students, families, and staff.   It is amazing to look back and to reflect on our accomplishments, making wonderful memories of our first year together: community nights, school colors, school mascot, establishing PTO, community build, building tours, opening day, Dedication Day, back-to-school nights, Orff Club, sing-alongs, PBIS school-wide celebrations, holiday celebrations, book fairs, conferences, Chess Club, International Festival, Fine Arts Nights, Borlaug’s Got Talent, spring carnival, spirit days, etc.
It means a great deal to have such a supportive and dedicated community, and I thank you all for making this journey one filled with joy and respect for all we have accomplished!  I am extremely proud and honored to be Borlaug’s principal!

Borlaug May Reminders

Our Borlaug Carnival, sponsored by our PTO, will be tomorrow, May 11th from 4:30-6:30pm.  Due to the uncertainty of the weather, the carnival will be held indoors in the gym, multi-purpose room, and in the first floor classrooms.  We hope you will be able to join us for an afternoon of fun!
Please join us for our last PTO meeting for this school year.  We will meet at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, May 14th, in the Borlaug library on second floor.
Please stop by to check out the Borlaug lost and found as we have many items.  These items will be picked up by the Saint Andrew Presbyterian Church volunteers for community distribution.  This pick up will take place after the last day of school which is Monday, June 3rd.  The last day of school is a 2:00 dismissal.
We are looking forward to a great end of our first year at Borlaug.
Thank you,
Mrs. Shoppa

Borlaug’s Got Talent!

Borlaug’s Got Talent was a huge success!  The Borlaug PTO, with leadership from Leslie Notle, was able to raise $1391.00 from the event.  The Borlaug students were so proud to share their talents, and it was a wonderful way for our community to gather and to celebrate our children. Thank you for supporting the event, and we look forward to continuing this new Borlaug tradition.

Borlaug International Festival was a huge success!

I want to thank our dedicated parents and staff for an outstanding International Festival last Friday evening.  It was wonderful to see us gathered as a community celebrating our various cultures through displays and sharing delicious foods.  Below is a link to a photo slide show of our International Festival which we hope you enjoy viewing as a family.http://www.edline.net/pages/Borlaug_Elementary_School/Activities/International_Festival
This Friday, March 15th, will be a special day at Borlaug – It’s Beach Day! Spring Break is just around the corner, so let’s pretend we are on a sunny beach instead of experiencing an Iowa winter!  We hope our Borlaug students will dress for the occasion with a fun t-shirt, or hat, or sunglasses, etc.
This Friday will also be our School-Wide BINGO celebration!  Our Borlaug Bulldogs have reached our goal of 40,000 Borlaug Bulldog tickets through their respectful, responsible, and safe behaviors. We will celebrate by playing BINGO for the last half hour of the day.  We will use our PA system and the SMART Boards to play as classroom teams.  It is sure to be lots of fun!
I hope you have a super Spring Break!

Borlaug’s Read Across America event held on Friday, March 1st

Hello Borlaug Families,

We hope you enjoy the
below link which is a slide show from Borlaugs Read Across America event held on Friday, March 1st .  The National Education Association’s “Read Across America” is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on the birthday of beloved children's author, Dr. Seuss.

Each Borlaug classroom, Preschool – 6th grade, enjoyed a visit from a member of the Coralville/Iowa City community.  The community members read their favorite children’s book, sharing their own love of reading, and its importance in their lives.

The Press-Citizen paper newspaper covered the story as well.  You will find an article in the Saturday, March 2nd paper under local news, page 3A.  It is wonderful to spotlight reading and our fabulous Borlaug community.

H2O for Life/Schools & Borlaug Partnership

Borlaug is proud to participate in a project to help people in the developing world who do not have access to clean, safe drinking water. We have joined an organization called “H2O for Life/Schools” to provide a donation system to help fund a clean water source for a school in need. We are officially announcing this new partnership as part of our International Festival on March 8. At the International Festival, we will have a table set up to take donations online or by writing a check. Our 5th and 6th graders have been learning about the very serious water needs in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. It feels right to reach out to people in need at this time. You can donate to this cause any time, by going to the website: “H2O for life schools.org” (http://h2oforlifeschools.org/). At this website, go to “Find Your Group,” select “Iowa” and then select Borlaug School. Here is a link about our partnership: http://www.edline.net/pages/Borlaug_Elementary_School/News/H2O_for_Life_flyer_Borlaug_pdf
