December Items of Interest

During October, the Iowa Assessments were administered to students in grades third through sixth; these assessments measure student achievement in reading, written expression, language, mathematics, science and social studies.

Parents of elementary children will receive a written report for their child at parent-teacher conferences in February. Parents may also access their child’s test scores through Power School at this time.

To access scores in Power School, parents will:
§  Login to Power School
§  Click on Additional Features
§  Click on IA Assessment Graph

If your student was in ICCSD both this year and last year, scores from both years are plotted on the graph. If you would like to have a card copy of your child’s IA Assessment Profile Narrative please feel free to contact the Borlaug office at 688-1155.  This document will also be shared with you at parent/teacher conferences.

The second item is a reminder that our first annual All- School Winter Sing Along and Orff Club Showcase is tomorrow Wednesday, December 19th at 10:00 am in the Borlaug gym.  Families are welcome to join us at this festive send-off to Winter Break!
The third item is a reminder that Borlaug Night at Carver Hawkeye Arena is tomorrow night, Wednesday, December 19th with the game starting at 5:30 pm.  Borlaug students will be featured at half time, so we hope you will be able to join us.  Student tickets are free and adults are $5.00.

Thank you for your continued support as our outstanding parents. You play an essential role in our efforts to keep students safe and successful at Borlaug. I wish you a wonderful winter break!

Thank you,

Borlaug will celebrate its first Spirit Day!

On Friday, October 26, Borlaug will celebrate its first Spirit Day.  We are inviting all students and staff to wear our school colors, black and gold!   Won’t it be fun to see our entire school decked out in our favorite Bulldog colors?  Go Bulldogs!  So, clean out those closets and dig up the black and gold!  Woof!  Woof!

We want to remind our Borlaug Community that this week, Oct. 22-26, we are participating in “Stock the Pantry Johnson County” as part of Make a Difference Day. A flyer came home last week explaining this is a community wide food drive, and Borlaug classrooms will have donation areas for the students to bring non-perishable food items.   We thank you for your generosity.

October Update

September 20th was a very memorable day as we celebrated the opening of Borlaug Elementary and the humanitarian for which we are named, Dr. Norman Borlaug.  We celebrated our school through song and presentation about Dr. Borlaug and his life’s accomplishments and philosophy.  Dr. Borlaug’s daughter, Jeanie Borlaug Laube, and his first cousin, Allen Borlaug, were impressed by the building but more importantly by our students.  I want to thank all who were able to attend and to those who made the day such a success!

During the months of September and October, your child(ren) have and will be participating in a variety of assessments. The assessments assist teachers in identifying areas of strengths, areas for growth, and ultimately the information will result in guiding instruction. In September, district reading tests were administered. During October 15-19, students in grades 3-6 will take the Iowa Assessments, formally known as ITBS. This test covers Reading, Language and Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies. During the final week of October, students in sixth grade will take the Iowa Youth Survey.

Parent teacher conferences will soon be approaching.  It is our goal to have 100% participation in our fall and spring conferences.  If you haven’t had a chance to sign up for a conference time, please contact your child’s teacher to set a time and date.  We have two night conference dates, November 1st and 8th, and we have conferences all day on November 9th. Thank you for your participation in this process and for supporting your child’s education.

Borlaug Update - September 17, 2012

Today our Borlaug PTO sent out an email to our families with our Borlaug Student Directory attached.  It was attached in two versions – one is alphabetical order as a school and the other by homerooms.  The directory is not a complete listing of all Borlaug students.  According to what parents marked in their E-Registration through Power School, we have 47 students whose families marked not to be included in the school directory.  Additionally, we have 27 students whose families marked not to provide parent contact information, such as email addresses, to the PTO.  Please keep this in mind if you are using the list to contact your child's whole class. If you need a hard copy of the student directory please call the Borlaug office at 688-1155.
Parents are now able to follow what is happening with the Borlaug Chess club at http://borlaugchess.blogspot.com/.   Check back weekly for updates to the chess ladder!
We are very excited for Thursday, September 20th which is our Borlaug Dedication Day at 9:30am.  All are welcome to join us in the gym to celebrate the opening of Borlaug Elementary and the humanitarian for which we are named, Dr. Norman Borlaug.  We will have Borlaug family members joining us as well as an executive officer from the Borlaug Heritage Foundation.  The children will be leading us in song and in a power point presentation of Dr. Borlaug’s life. If possible, please send your child to school on the 20th in his/her Opening Day Borlaug t-shirt.
We will continue celebrating at lunchtime on the 20th by having team level picnics on the front lawn of Borlaug. The students reached our school-wide goal of 50,000 Borlaug Bulldog tickets from our PBIS program, earning this special event.
Our Team 1 and 2 Back-to School Night will be Thursday, September 20th as well.  Our kindergartener students’ time is from 5:30-6:30pm and for our 1st and 2nd graders’ time is from 6:30-7:30pm.  For this evening we will have childcare provided during the teacher presentation portion of the evening. I cannot thank you enough for all of the outstanding support this school year.  From the positive comments about our secure building for safety of our students to the kind comments about our fabulous staff, it means so much in building our culture of caring at Borlaug.
Thank you and have a wonderful evening.

First Borlaug Bulletin, August 27th

Hello Borlaug Families,
This is Principal Shoppa with a Borlaug update.  Attached to an email you will find our first Borlaug Bulletin with information from Borlaug, the Iowa City Community School District, and our Borlaug PTO.  If you need to have the Borlaug Bulletin send home in hard copy, please contact our office at 688-1155.
I wanted to share a few reminders as well.  I am excited to report that Girl Scouts will be visiting Borlaug tonight, Monday, August 27, 7:00pm, in the multi-purpose room. Students received colorful stickers promoting tonight’s meeting.
Our PTO Innisbrook Fundraiser continues through September 4th.  We greatly appreciate your support as we work to raise money for PTO start-up needs to support our students and staff.
With the fog this morning, it was brought to my attention that our students on bikes were difficult to be seen.  Please review with your bike rider safety precautions in such weather conditions as well as bike safety rules.  Our Borlaug Bulldog bikers have been so responsible with walking their bikes while on campus. Thank you!
I hope you have a wonderful week.
Sincerely,
Celeste Shoppa

PTO Fundraiser with Innisbrook

Hello Borlaug Families and Staff,
The Borlaug PTO is excited to announce that on Monday, August 20th,  our students will be coming home with an outstanding fundraising opportunity.  Each student will have a packet from Innisbrook and in this packet there will be a catalog offering premium gift wrap, chocolates, and other wonderful gift items.  The packet will also include easy instructions on how to place your orders as well as a toll free customer service number to help with any questions you may have.  Our sale will run from Monday, August 20th through Tuesday, September 4th.  We appreciate your support as we try and reach our fundraising goal of $3,000.
We have noticed that some Borlaug students are arriving before 8:10 in the morning.  We want our children safe and since we do not have supervision until 8:10, please arrive no earlier than 8:10.  Thank you also to the families who have created last name signs for their cars during carline at dismissal time.  It is a great help to those staff members on carline duty.
We are looking forward to another wonderful week of learning at Borlaug!

Borlaug Elementary's First Day!

What fabulous first day at Borlaug Elementary!   We had so many excited and smiling faces both from the children and the staff.  We ended our day with our whole school photo, wearing our Borlaug t-shirts.  We hope you enjoyed seeing your child come home proudly wearing Norm, our bulldog mascot.
When looking at our end of the day dismissal procedures we want to share a few reminders with our families.  Tomorrow is again a 1:55 dismissal day for all Iowa City schools – just like today.  Be sure to review with your child daily how he/she will get home.  If there is a change in the regular routine, please send a note to school for your child’s teacher.  This keeps us all well-informed so we know how to help your child at the end of the school day. All of our students will be escorted to their dismissal destinations each day, so older students will need to meet up with younger siblings at these locations, not at classrooms.  We have staff members for every grade level who will walk our bus students, carline students, walking students, and BASP students to their dismissal destinations.
We want to remind our car line families to be sure to have a sign in your front window showing the last name of your children for pick-up.  Be sure it is large enough for the carline staff to see easily.  This will help us speed up the carline process.
For our students who are walking home, we will have them meet parents at the east playground gate.  This will elevate the congestion by the front entry, as we have students being escorted to their dismissal destinations by staff.
Thank you so much for your support, as we are off to a great start!

Ice Cream Social and the 1st Day of School!

Borlaug’s Ice Cream Social is Tuesday, August 14th.  It will begin at 6:15 pm with families gathering outside on the eastside playground, before entering the building.  We will gather to begin our evening together and to dedicate our new playground.  Teachers will then enter the building to be to their classrooms in time to greet their students and families.  Class lists will be displayed in the front hallway and in the library on the second floor.
We still need many Borlaug families to update their E-Registration accounts.  Please call us at 688-1155 if you need any assistance.  We are currently at about 70% of our families updated.  We want to have 100% updated, so we are sure we have the most current information for contact purposes.
We will have early release on both the first and second day of school.  This means we will dismiss at 1:55 on Thursday, August 16th and at 1:55 on Friday, August 17th.  We want to remind our preschool families that preschool begins on Monday, August 20th.
On the first day of school, we will have a school-wide photo taken with our Borlaug students and staff in their new Borlaug t-shirts.  These are t-shirts that were purchased for us by Hills Bank, as a welcome to the Coralville Community. Your child will bring home his/her shirt on the first day of school so you have it for future sprit days at Borlaug.  We thank Hills Bank for their generosity!
We look forward to seeing you on the 14th!

The Borlaug Family Handbook

Hello Borlaug Families,

The Borlaug Family Handbook is now on the front page of our Borlaug website.  You will also find it under Parent Resources.  It has a great deal of information that you will find helpful in preparing for the fast approaching school year.

The first school day bell rings at 8:25 with an 8:35 tardy bell.  Students may start lining up at their designated playground areas as early as 8:10, which is when teacher supervision begins.  The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders will line up at the colored circles on the west playground and the kindergarteners, 5th and 6th graders will line up at the colored circles on the east playgrounds. Classroom teachers will be out the first day to let students know which color dot is theirs.

The Family Handbook outlines procedures for pick-up and drop-off as well as dismissal procedures.  The east parking lot is for car parking and for the car line after school, while the west parking lot is our bus loop.  Please remember patience as we work through perfecting such procedures.  Safety is our number one goal for all of our students and their families.

The Family Handbook contains the school supply list, but if you need a hard copy you will find them in the local stores or you can stop by the Borlaug office.  If you need a hard copy of the Family Handbook please let us know as well.

Our next PTO meeting is Tuesday, August 7th at 6:30 at Borlaug in our library on the second floor.  We hope you can join us as we continue planning for the coming year.

We want to remind you of our Ice Cream Social on Tuesday, August 14th starting at 6:15 to 7:30.  Class lists will be posted that evening. We will gather on the east playground to start the event with our playground dedication.  Teachers will then enter the building first so they are in their classrooms ready to greet their students and families.  While visiting your child’s classroom, you will receive a packet of information including envelops for paying the text book fee and the assignment notebook fee – which is only for our 3rd through 6th graders.  It is sure to be a wonderful night for all!

Sincerely,
Celeste Shoppa, Principal

July News

Hello, Borlaug families and staff,
I have with three pieces of information to share.  First of all, I want to thank all who donated their time and energy to plan for and to participate in the Borlaug playground community build.   What an accomplishment – three playgrounds for the start of the school year!
Secondly we would like to invite the Borlaug Community to grade level tours on Thursday, July 26th.  Each grade level tour will begin on the hour and end with ice pops with the principal. The preschool and kindergarten tours will begin at 1:00, the first and second grade tour begins at 2:00, the third and fourth grade tour begins at 3:00, and the fifth and sixth grade tour begins at 4:00 pm. If you have more than one student at Borlaug, please feel free to choose one of the grade level tours for your family, or you may come to each tour for your particular children.  There will then be community tours provided from 5:00-7:00 pm.
Borlaug teachers and staff will lead the building tours.  You will be able to see the common spaces and one classroom per wing.  We hope you enjoy this sneak peek of the building prior to the ice cream social which is Tuesday, August 14th from 6:15 to 7:30 pm.  You will see there is much work still being accomplished in preparation for the opening of the school year.
The last piece of exciting news is that Borlaug will have straight grades configurations, kindergarten through sixth grade. There will be three sections of Kindergarten, three sections of 1st Grade, two sections of 2nd Grade, two sections of 3rd  Grade, two sections of 4th Grade, two sections of 5th Grade, and one section of 6th Grade.  The Borlaug teachers and administrative team are very pleased with this change.
We are looking forward to an outstanding opening year!

Borlaug Kindergarten Camp, August 9th & 10th

Hello, Borlaug Kindergarten Families,

We are very excited to start the new school year this fall and to welcome you and your child to Borlaug Elementary.  We are thrilled to offer to our kindergarteners Borlaug’s Kindergarten Camp which will be held on August 9th and 10th from 8:30-11:30 am at Borlaug Elementary.

The Borlaug kindergarten teachers, along with additional adult assistance, will acclimate our soon to be kindergarteners to the routines of school.  The children will learn Borlaug expectations as they participate in class activities, recess, and lunch. It will be a wonderful way for us to teach the children our routines, along with starting to make new friendships.
To register your incoming 2012-13 Borlaug kindergartener, please complete the registration form found on the Borlaug website.  This form was also mailed to our kindergarten families via US Mail and through email.  If you would like your kindergartener to participate in our Kindergarten Camp please complete the form and return it to Mrs. Shoppa’s email, or call us at 688-1155 to register over the phone.

We hope your child will able to join us for these two fun-filled mornings.

Celeste Shoppa, Borlaug Principal

Borlaug Playground Community Build July 12, 13, 14

Hello, Borlaug Families and Staff,
The committee members have been working hard planning for our new playgrounds at Borlaug.  The fundraising efforts continue to be successful, and as of this week we are $20,000 short of meeting our financial goal for installation of three playground structures on school grounds prior to the start of the school year. If you haven’t already donated and would like to, please visit the Borlaug website for links or call us at 688-1155.
If you are unable to make a monetary gift, we can still use your help!  We are planning a community build of the playground structures on July 12, 13 and 14.   Please save these dates on your calendars.  We will need thirty volunteers on each of those days.  No building experience necessary; we will train on location.  You can sign up to volunteer online by following the “Playground Progress!” link on the Borlaug Elementary website which will take you to the Sign Up Genius link.
The last item is to invite you to our next Borlaug PTO meeting on July 10th at 6:30pm in the lower level of the Coralville Library.  We hope you will be able to join us as we continue to plan for our new school.

News to Share

Hello, Borlaug Families and Staff,

This is Principal Shoppa with three pieces of information to share.

The Borlaug Community Night on April 21st was very well-attended. We want to let you know the name of our bulldog mascot is Norm.  Thank you for your votes on Saturday night.  The bulldog plush toy raffles went to  a 1st grader at Weber and to a 4th grader at Horn – Congratulations!

The Borlaug Elementary School fundraising efforts are well under way. To fully construct and equip all three playgrounds, as well as provide start-up funds for experiential learning programs for 2012-2013, a minimum of $80,000 needs to be raised.

To allow the playground planning committee adequate time to make final selections and allow time for delivery of the equipment, we ask you to respond by May 15 using the contribution forms mailed to your home in late March. If you need another contribution form, you may call us at the Roosevelt Elementary office at 688-1155 or email Sheila Baldwin at baldwinhome@mchsi.com.

The last item is to remind parents of our May 15th Borlaug PTO meeting at the Coralville Library at 6:30 pm.  We hope you will be able to join us as we continue to plan for our new school.

Have a good day,
Mrs. Shoppa, Principal

Registration for Borlaug BASP Begins January 18
The Coralville Parks and Recreation Department is preparing to open the Borlaug Before and Afterschool Program (BASP) in the fall of 2012 with the opening of Norman Borlaug Elementary School. Registration for the BASP will begin January 18.
Forms and information are available online, at the Coralville Recreation Center, and at those school offices of which children will transfer to Norman Borlaug Elementary School.
Norman Borlaug Elementary BASP will be a partnership school between the Iowa City Community School District and the City of Coralville. Coralville will provide a full service before and after school program with care for students in kindergarten through sixth grade. Currently, the Parks and Recreation Department provides before and after school activities for over 210 children in four different programs and provides additional recreation programming evenings and weekends.
